How to Use Hashtags on Instagram
If you’re trying to get discovered on the ‘gram, hashtags can play a key role. What works and what doesn’t changes pretty often, but knowing the finer points of hashtag use can be the difference between a lagging IG account and watching your follower and like count steadily climb.
Since you can click on the hashtag and find other posts with the same hashtag, and moreover, other people can find your post, we think it’s a funky, helpful little doodad. Let’s hope it catches on.
Here are some Instagram hashtag tips:
- You can use up to 30 hashtags on an Instagram post and up to 10 in a story.
- Supposedly Instagram favors accounts that use 10-15 hashtags. We have yet to see actual data supporting this. Data > emotions, no matter how hot or not you find Brent Spiner.
- If you feel the 30 looks spammy, put them in the first comment. You can also use the eyedropper tool to camouflage against your background image.
- Use hashtags with less than 500,000 posts. If you’re posting to a hashtags with millions of posts, your post will get lost and you probably won’t get much engagement.
- Use hashtags that relate to the photo and to the person who might be searching for it. For instance, on the image below of the Target Opalhouse Egg Chair, we used hashtags like #junglehome and #lifestyleblogger, but we also used hashtags that targeted (er, pun intended?) Target fans like #targetstyle #targetobsessed, and so on. If you click into the image below you’ll see all the hashtags in the first comment. Great choices include locations and activities, the main subject of your picture, and hashtags about what kind of account you run. Essentially, think about who you want to reach and what they might be searching for.
- How do you find these? I use the native Instagram search bar, but you can also use app like Plann to schedule your feed and research hashtags.
- Finally, switch up your hashtags every so often or delete them from old posts to keep your account from looking spammy.
