As Seen on TV: Try the Coital Alignment Technique from Sex/Life

As Billie from Netflix’s Sex/Life explained, there are books about the Coital Alignment Technique. Specifically, psychotherapist Edward Eichel wrote a book on the technique that can help women have more orgasms. Luckily for you, you don’t have to read a whole book on the subject. Just this article.

The coital alignment technique, or CAT, is a sex position that’s all about maximizing clitoral stimulation in the classic missionary position. According to a 2015 study, 36.6% of women reported that they need clitoral stimulation in order to orgasm. So why not take the penis and put it on the part that makes your orgasm?

How to Do the Coital Alignment Technique

First, an equipment check: for the coital alignment technique, one partner will need to have a vulva and the other will need a penis or a strap-on with a dildo.

To get into position, the receiving partner lays on their back and the penetrating partner lays on top facing forward — just like the trusty missionary position. Then, the penetrating partner moves their body higher so their chest is lined up with the receiving partner’s shoulders. It’s the best position for the ever sexy nipple-to-eye contact.

The penetrating partner puts their weight on the receiving partner to maximize friction. If they want to hold their upper body up with their arms, they should do it with the pelvis down. Think upward facing dog, but you’re aligning your genitals instead of your chakras.

Once situated, insert the tip of the penis, pointing downward into the vagina instead of upward. The penetrating partner should rock up and down in smooth, slow, vertical movements to slowly rub against the clitoris.

Tips for Perfecting the Coital Alignment Technique

  1. Keep the pace slow and steady with even strokes. It’s difficult to keep the alignment right if you’re shaking it like a Polaroid picture. Slow and steady wins the orgasm race, and prevents penis injuries.
  2. Have the receiving partner help with the rocking movement by rocking their hips upward while the penetrating partner strokes downward. You’ll want to keep your rhythm even, so put on a sexy, slow song to keep the beat.
  3. Place a pillow under the receiving partner’s back to prop up their pelvis. Anything that helps bring your pelvises closer together will create more of that good friction.
  4. If you’re using a strap-on, use a vibrating dildo to add some good vibrations to your sweet sensations.
  5. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work right away. Communicate with your partner about what feels good and what needs adjustment. In Sex/Life, Cooper bails on even trying to make the CAT work after some feedback from Billie. Taking adjustments as personal criticisms is even less sexy than not being Brad in the first place.
