When summer hits, humid days become more and more plentiful. Where there is heat and moisture, there is frizzy hair. And unfortunately, frizzy hair is a workaholic. She isn’t here to relax with you on vacation with the girls. Clearly, no one has told her about quiet quitting yet. Luckily, these humidity hair tips can help to tame the beast.
By using these tested products and techniques, you can make all hair types and textures a little bit more relaxed. Just don’t give it a tequila shot first. Then all bets are off.
9 Tips to Protect Your Hair in Humidity
1. Use sulfate-free shampoo.
Sorry, sulfate. There’s no room for you on this yacht party. Margarita mix, welcome on board, and please bring friends.
Shampoos with sulfate can strip away moisture, making your hair dry and brittle. So during these hot months (or all the months), pick a sulfate-free shampoo so you can wash your hair while maintaining all of the moisture in your scalp.
2. Comb conditioner through your hair.
One major key to combat frizzy hair in humid weather is to moisturize your hair. Because although you can’t control everything in life (looking at you, Taylor Swift tickets), you can control that frizz.
This tip benefits all hair types, but especially curly hair. While in the shower, apply conditioner throughout your hair and use a wide-tooth comb to distribute it. Start at the tips and work your way up to the scalp to work in as much moisture as possible.
For bonus points, use conditioner with coconut oil such as Garnier’s Smoothing Conditioner with Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter. Who doesn’t love extra credit?
3. Avoid using a towel to dry your hair.
Towels are great at drying bodies, but they don’t achieve the same effect on hair. Instead, use an old shirt or a towel made from microfiber.
Curly haired girlies, we’re especially looking at you. The shirt or microfiber towel will add more definition to your hair. In a sexy way, not a “did she just walk through the car wash?” way.
4. Avoid using high heat when styling.
If you’re in a rush, try using low heat to blow dry your hair. Better yet, let it air dry for optimal results. And if you still need to use your blow dryer regularly? (We get it, planning ahead for air drying isn’t always in the cards.) Invest in one that doesn’t use a lot of heat, like Revlon’s.
If you have curly hair, avoid using a flat-iron to reduce frizzy hair. As simple as this solution would be, it will actually make the problem worse next time you wash your hair and return it to its natural state. It’s a bit like selling your soul, but waaaay lower stakes.
5. Ditch the keratin treatment.
At first, keratin on curly hair seems like a dream come true: a chance to tame the mane with an outcome akin to Mia’s Princess Diaries makeover. However, keratin is a chemical that weakens your hair follicles and destroys the natural curly shape of your hair in the long-run. You heard us: Disney lied to you and Princess Mia would’ve needed a big chop to make her hair healthy again.
Avoid all that drama and try a curl cream that will moisturize your curls rather than encouraging long-term damage. If Mia jumped off a bridge… yeah, okay, we would follow, too. She has great leadership skills!
6. Apply a leave-in conditioner.
Leave-in conditioner reduces frizzy hair with repeated use. As a longer term version of regular conditioner, using one in your routine will help keep your hair moisturized and unbothered. We can’t help you bring that same energy to work to deal with that pesky coworker, though.
Comb the leave-in conditioner through damp hair starting from your ends and working your way up. By incorporating this product into your long-term hair care routine, you’ll keep your curls defined and prevent frizzy hair from creeping up on you. 7. Apply an anti-frizz serum.
An anti-frizz serum achieves the goal of reducing frizz in humid weather. Like, duh. It’s in the name.
Versions of this product vary from a general serum to a hairspray that provides extra hold and reduces flyaways. For curly hair, hairspray may weigh down curls. Instead, an anti-humidity finishing spray can be applied. Just don’t ask us the difference between a hairspray and a finishing spray, besides the fact that one is a musical starring John Travolta.
8. Choose a hair oil for frizzy hair.
Hair oil moisturizes your hair and reduces frizz. But, it’s important to use only a small amount on the ends or anywhere that has frizzy spots. You don’t want to use too much and end up looking like a glazed donut. We want you looking like a snack, but not that kind.
If you have curly hair, scrunch the oil after you’ve applied your other styling products to keep your locks nourished and prevent frizz from popping up. A game of Whack-a-Mole is best reserved for the boardwalk.
9. Apply Shea butter.
Shea butter is another product perfect for natural textures and curly hair. Shea is a blessing in the battle against frizzy hair. As long as Shea isn’t also the name of your middle school hair bully.
Apply it by massaging a small amount into the scalp every day. Yes, every day. Even the days when you “forget” to take your makeup off. We’re always watching.
