Move over, PlayStation 5 — we’re gaming with our Kegels now. Thanks to the nice folks over at Perifit, we got to try out their device that combines Kegel exercises with video games.
In other words, we’re never going to forget to do our Kegels again.
What Are Kegels?
While you might be just really excited to get your hands on another video game, it’s important that you first know what Kegels are.
If you’ve ever had to stop peeing suddenly, the muscles that you use to do that are your pelvic floor muscles. And, like any other muscle in your body, you can train them to be stronger.
Why Should You Do Kegels?
Your pelvic floor supports your uterus, bladder, small intestine, and rectum — basically all stuff we’d prefer to keep tucked inside. A weak pelvic floor can also cause urinary incontinence, the TV commercial term for peeing your pants. If you pee a little when you laugh, cough, or sneeze, your pelvic floor may need some beefing up. And the way to do that is through Kegel exercises.
(The name comes from gynecologist Dr. Arnold Kegel who found that pelvic floor exercises helped his patients who were experiencing urinary incontinence after giving birth.)
As if not peeing when you laugh isn’t motivation enough, having strong pelvic floor muscles may also help make sex better.
Some people report that the exercises allow these muscles to contract more strongly during orgasm, resulting in a more powerful O. And, they say their partners appreciate the sensation of those muscles flexing “on” them.
There are other Kegel devices that are Bluetooth-enabled such as the Elvie Trainer or the Joy ON.
But, that doesn’t change the fact that doing Kegel exercises is pretty boring. Enter, Perifit.
What Is Perifit?
The Perifit is a Kegel exerciser made by a small company in France. It lets you play video games simply by flexing your pelvic floor muscles. It’s also a great way to make your video game addiction work for you.
How Does the Perifit Work?
The Perifit has deep pelvic floor and superficial pelvic floor layer sensors, so it knows where or what you’re squeezing. It rates the quality of your squeezes on a meter so you know when you’re using the right muscles.
One of the hardest things about Kegel exercises is figuring out which muscles to contract. You may think you’re doing Kegels as instructed by some web page, but it’s hard to tell if you’re working the right muscles. When you use the Perifit, you know exactly which muscles are controlling the game.
But, the best part is that comes with nine different games, so it feels more like playing Mario than exercising.
To get started, unpack the device and download the app. Once you have the device connected and the app set up, start with the pelvic floor test, a short quiz that helps you decide on a training program.

The training courses include:

The app then walks you through how to insert the device and start gaming. The device is made of medical-grade silicone, so it’s safe to use with water-based lubricant.
Once you’re comfortable, start with Practice Mode. This allows you to try the device without keeping score, so you get a sense of how to use your muscles during the games. And won’t get frustrated that you can’t keep your animated car on the road.
Your first instinct may be to clench every muscle below the waist as hard as possible for the most points—just like how you might mash all the buttons on the controller when trying to get Sub-Zero to do his fatality move already.
But the multi-sensor design makes sure you’re only clenching the correct muscles; it won’t work if you clamp down like you’re trying to shoot the Perifit across the room.
Once you’re done practicing, click on a training module to start playing one of the games.
Afterwards, clean the Perifit with soap and water. Don’t worry about finding the charger— there isn’t one: the Perifit comes with a charged battery meant to last for 10 years. If it runs out beforehand, this might be a sign you’re playing too much.
What Did I Actually Think of the Perifit?
For me, Kegel exercises are similar to meditation. In that I know doing them is good for my health, but I feel like I’m just lying there, I get easily distracted, and I definitely have to pee. The Perifit games make Kegels more like playing on my phone than exercising, which made me much more likely to actually do it.
The app recommends training for 30 minutes a week, whether you split that into a few minutes a day or one 30-minute session.
My plan was to just do a few minutes, but I was so into collecting gems that 15 minutes flew by before my pelvic floor muscles were too tired to continue.
I had Netflix on in the background—I am a millennial, so couldn’t possibly be in front of fewer than two screens at once—but I completely stopped paying attention to the show as I got absorbed in the game. BTW, someone please let me know how the smarmy male lead softened Juila Stiles’s edges this time.
The games are challenging at first, since you have to learn to contract your pelvic floor muscles correctly without squeezing other muscles. It was frustrating, but made me want to try again and again.
In terms of the results I got with the Perifit, my pelvic floor muscles do seem to be improving. According to the Perifit app, the quality of my contractions went up by 37% in just a week. I’m not ready to crush an egg with my pelvic floor, but maybe I will be when I get to level nine.
If you want to strengthen your pelvic floor, but can’t remember to do your Kegel exercises or aren’t sure you’re doing them right, I definitely recommend getting one of these.
