Each day, an average of more than 6000 thoughts course through the human brain. And, while we’d like to say each and every one is unique, many of those are thoughts you probably had yesterday. And, they’re the same thoughts your neighbor had yesterday too.
Which is what makes the Instagram account Story of My Fucking Life so funny. Each post features crudely drawn covers filled with text that is excruciatingly relatable.
Mustian — formerly of Someecards, Texts From Last Night, and probably half the meme sites you visit or share stuff from on the Internet —created the viral Instagram account in 2017 that’s just been turned into an actual book, which you can order here.
The inspiration? Twitter.
“A few years back I just happened upon a funny tweet where the format was “____ that happens to me every day and sucks — A memoir.” And it kinda made me realize that there are so many “memoirs” I could write about my life. Then I started thinking about how it’s not just memoirs, it’s textbooks, Choose Your Own Adventure books, cookbooks, etc, and that’s all I needed to determine that this could be a whole social media account.”
“I wanted to have these appear as real books, or illustrations of them, not just tweets. I Photoshopped and sketched a few concepts and then just kinda went with what I thought worked.” With the help of a designer, he found a style and a few templates that worked.
“Now, pretty much when anything happens to me that seems weird, or shameful, or frustrating, or, well, fucking bullshit, I try to come up with a cover about it. Or, they’re examples of me venting the things I think but, you know, common decency and “society” would prefer I not say out loud.”
The 160-page half self-help journal half-comedy art book can bring some levity to those days when your neighbor has decided to run their mower at 7am.
