It’s about time for us to start listing out costume ideas, only to procrastinate and then panic two days before Halloween and Amazon order anything that resembles an outfit. But times are a’changing, and we’re going for one of these Cruella de Vil costume ideas this year. Decision is hot on us.
Despite her cruel and spoiled demeanor, we have to admit that Cruella is a style icon. Her choice in fabric is… questionable, but the Disney villain knows fashion, doggonit. With Halloween rapidly approaching, there is no better costume to embrace your inner fashionista.
There have been many iterations of Cruella DeVille, from the OG cartoon, to Glenn Close’s 1996 portrayal, to Emma Stone’s 2021 iteration. And now, thanks to us, you can DIY any of them. Choose one or wear a different option each night.
6 Cruella de Vil Costume Ideas
1. Classic Cruella Costume
Call us traditionalists, but the original cartoon is what we think of when someone utters the name “Cruella.” The 1961 Disney film depicts Ms. DeVille with a long fur coat–definitely made from an endangered species—red gloves, and, of course, a cigarette holder.
Nothing says evil like carelessly waving around second-hand smoke. Indoors, no less!
2. Dalmatian Dress Outfit
No dogs were harmed in the making of this outfit from the 2021 film, however convincing it may seem. The wig colors are opposite from the dress colors, giving a yin yang quality to the look.
Hey, maybe Cruella can use that symbol as her fashion inspiration from now on and leave innocent puppies out of it? Yes, even the one who chewed up your shoe.
3. Glenn Close’s Cruella
The costumes for the 1996 adaptation were so good, Glenn Close kept them. This red number has the over-the-top flair de Vil is known for—and the devilish tone referenced by her name.
You do understand where the name “de Vil” comes from, right? Just checking.
4. Petal Dress
Emma Stone’s Cruella wears this costume on top of a car – a parked one. We don’t recommend doing it on top of a moving car, but if you’re stuck in traffic on the freeway, then it’s probably fine.
We’ll be real, this costume is a commitment, requiring many pieces, including a petticoat, wig, and epaulets, but the payoff is so worth it.
5. Flame Dress
In the newest film, Cruella enters a black-and-white masquerade in a white cloak, which she removes and burns, revealing a signature red gown.
While we don’t condone arson, we would kind of get it if you’re dedicated to committing to the bit. Just keep an extinguisher on hand, and put. The puppies. Down.
6. Motorcycle Look
If you are striving to be bold, this all-black leather look is definitely going to make you stand out.
Use a stencil to write “the future” on your face. Word to the wise: make sure it’s in the right direction, otherwise you’ll have a lot of people asking what “erutuf” means.
